Seitan and ale stew, cause you can never have too many stews right?

I really like stew, specially at this time of year, I could live off stews for months and never get bored, but mabye thats just me. Here is a nice hearty, yet simple vegan stew for yu all to enjoy.

1 tbsp vegetable oil
1 can of diced seitan/mock duck in gravy – if using homemade add extra stock in later when adding liquids

1 onion, thinly sliced
1 big smooth skinned potato, diced
2 carrots, ends chopped the slice into halve moons
2 tbsp plain flour

1/2 a bottle of vegan ale
3/4 cup of stock
the gravy from the can of mock duck
1 tin of green lentils/ 1 cup of ready cooked
1 tsp dried thyme
2 bay leafs

in a preheated pan with the vegetable oil, brown off the seitan/mock duck and remove from the pan to add back in later. Then add the veggies to the pan, cook till well browned, stirring often so nothing burns. Once the veggies are well browned add the flour and stir through cook for about a minute whilst stirring then add in your ale, followed by the gravy and the stock, then the drained lentils, salt, pepper, thyme and bay leafs, bring to the boil then back down to a simmer and cook untill your veggies are tender and the stew is thickened, stir the seitan back in. Enjoy on a cold day surrounded by blankets and cats.

  1. Agreed: soups and stews. I’m practically living off of soups right now. Easy to make, reheat beautifully, filling…Ditto for stews. Anyway, love the addition of ale in this. I’ll bet it adds wonderful flavor.

  2. This recipe is my pick for the recipe submissions on The Vegetarian Ginger! Thanks for the fantastic recipe, it was my first time cooking with ale and seitan and I loved both! I could only find the chicken seitan instead of duck but it worked out well anyways. Here’s the post if you want to check it out:
